Dental Check-ups and Hygiene
Having regular six monthly check-ups enable dental conditions to be identified early and effectively treated. Early detection leads to minimal procedures and lower cost.
2
Gum Disease
Gum disease is caused by plaque and tartar build-up on teeth. Signs of gum disease include the following (A) Red, swollen or tender gums or other pain or sensitivity in your mouth (B) Bleeding gums while brushing, flossing, or eating hard food (C) Gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth (D) Bad breath.

Fillings
Tooth decay is caused by bacteria which convert sugars to acids. This leads to demineralisation and destruction of the hard tooth structure which create holes in teeth. Typical signs are sensitivity or pain to hot, cold and sweet foods. The decay is first removed and the tooth prepared for filling. The most common filling material is composite resin which is mercury free and colour matched to the existing tooth. This is virtually undetectable and blends seamlessly with the shape of the existing tooth structure restoring the damage. Another option is Silver Amalgam which is a conventional metal alloy filling that provides a cost-effective and stable solution. If you’re unsure about which filling option to select ask your dentist for a recommendation.

Crowns
A crown is a custom made restoration that fits over the entire tooth. It protects and holds the tooth together. Crowns are usually done when a tooth is poorly shaped, fractured, chipped, badly decayed, discoloured or after root canal therapy. They are typically bonded to the tooth using dental cement. Crowns are often used to improve the strength or appearance of teeth. Types of crowns are all ceramic, porcelain fused to metal or gold. Discuss with your dentist at Moonee Valley Dental for a recommendation.

Complicated cases are normally referred to a specialist.

Dentures
For patients with missing teeth where implants or bridges are not the treatment of choice dentures offer a cost effective solution. Dentures can be complete or partial and are removable. Partial dentures are for patients who are missing some of their teeth on a particular arch. Complete dentures are worn by patients who are missing all of the teeth on a single arch. Implant supported dentures – implants are sometimes used to stabilise dentures. This is becoming increasingly popular due to its effectiveness and long term results.
